Born in Celle / Germany in 1979 Elmar Brass spent six years of his childhood in the West African country of Niger. From age 11 onwards he received classical piano training in Germany.
Throughout the years 1999 to 2004 he studied Jazz-Piano at Hanover’s University of Music and Drama where he attended classes and courses led by the likes of Rolf Zielke, Bernd Homann or Nils Wogram. After graduating from university Elmar Brass spent some time in New York City.
He participated in international competitions like the Montreux Jazz Festival related „Piano Competition“ in 2008 and 2009, the Parisian „Concours Martial Solal“ in 2006 and 2010 as well as the Swiss „International Jazz Meeting Frauenfeld“ in 2006 and 2008 and was awarded with several prizes, accolades and awards for his musical work.
Furthermore Elmar Brass played numerous shows in clubs and festivals in European countries like Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Poland as well as worldwide, e.g. in Russia, Japan and the United States.
Being the founder of the widely recognized and highly acclaimed Elmar Brass Trio he released several full length albums with his outfit and has a close working relationship with the Japanese Jazz imprint „Atelier Sawano“ since 2008.
Musicwise he also worked with and played concerts alongside artists like Peter Bernstein, Dusko Goykovich, Tony Lakatos, Stephan Abel, Ed Kröger and many more.
As a part of his academic career Elmar Brass teaches Jazz Piano at the Hanover’s University of Music, Drama and Media as well as at Bremen’s University of Arts.
